April Collection
My Last Month in Green Bay! 👀
Yes! This is not clickbait, April was in fact my last full month living in Green Bay (at least for quite some time). In case you haven’t heard, I’ve temporarily moved back to Door County, WI and I’ve returned to my previous bartending position, which I’m very excited about! I received a lot of positive feedback on my article, How Bartending Changed Me, especially with comments saying people wished it was longer. Perhaps a longer version will come this way as my time in Door County ends in the next few weeks. What’s after Door County, you ask? … no spoilers!
Film & TV
It’s been refreshing to revisit a lot of favorite shows, as well as binge some new mini series and find new films in my favorite genres. I’ve been watching two of my favorite returning series, Yellowjackets and Game Changer, however I have not been as consistent with Yellowjackets as I normally am. Truthfully, I am a month or two late to the new season. Also, I believe I mentioned Make Some Noise in a previous post, but if you haven’t been watching Dropout I highly encourage watching either Make Some Noise or Game Changer.
As for mini series, last month my mom and I finished Long Bright River, so I’ve been filling the crime drama void with Adolescence and Toxic Town. Adolescence is a fantastic series and I love how the conflict snowballs up until the final moment. At the beginning, it’s a gripping thriller, and at the end, it’s a sad reality. Toxic Town, is a really beautiful true crime adaptation, but it’s definitely more lighthearted for a crime drama. There’s also Common Side Effects, which looks a lot more whimsical than it really is (in a good way) and is a great show that pulls the curtain back on shady big pharma companies. It’s also by the creators of Scavenger’s Reign, which is one of my favorite animated series.
I also added The Outrun and Certain Women to my long list of beloved slow films. I personally categorize them both under the slow film umbrella, but they are in fact quite different. The Outrun is a movie about a woman struggling with alcoholism, and the audience frequently finds them thrown into different parts of the timeline. I found myself confused a few times on where in her sobriety journey the character was, but I think that was done intentionally. One, because sobriety is not a linear journey, and two, because there were multiple sequences of her being intoxicated and confused and the audience was meant to feel the same way. I categorize it as a slow film because the movie is primarily about her character, and her sobriety being a sole driving force. As for Certain Women, there is no doubt it belongs in the slow film category, as is was directed by Kelly Reichardt, the reigning queen of slow cinema. To me, Certain Women is a beautiful example of an anthology film, where the film is broken up into three different sections, all with a different protagonists, but connected by their rural Montana community.
Also a I had to watch a bit of Sex and the City, obviously. (iykyk hehe)
Albums
My latest obsession has been the Imaginal Disk album by Magdalena Bay. This album has zero skips and is honestly the perfect spring/summer soundtrack. I’ve honestly played barely anything else.
Also feeling nostalgic with new Bon Iver and Djo releases. Every time I listen to Djo I feel nostalgic for Chicago, and I love hearing the new Bon Iver music and hearing where their sound has evolved from past albums, especially because the SABLE, EP and fABLE album pairing is a perfect representation of ‘old’ and ‘new’ bon iver.
Lastly, I listened to the new Samia album, Bloodless. Having never listened to her before, I really enjoyed it, which makes me want to do a deep dive of her other albums.
That’s all for this month, thanks for coming back again!
